Message from the SLML President

By: Jackie Hittner, SLML President

Many of us do not think of late August and September as a new beginning but it is. If you have children school begins and a new schedule is put in place at home so homework gets done as well as sports practices, dance lessons, music lessons, etc. Librarians working in academic settings have a whole new class of medical students, nursing students and freshmen. We will all begin to experience soon the new season of fall as days continue to get shorter and cooler and the leaves begin to turn to brilliant colors of red, orange and yellow.

SLML begins anew too. New board members attended their first board meeting on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. Plans are already underway in all of the SLML committees for the 2004-2005 activities. Revised by-laws means SLML must revise the procedure manual. The calendar at slml.org has continuing education programs for membership to attend. Some members are getting ready to go to MCMLA 2004 in Kansas City.

On top of all the regular SLML activities, SLML will continue to prepare for the MCMLA 2006 meeting in St. Louis. At the annual business meeting in June, several members signed up to be on committees. The local arrangements committee will be contacting members who did not sign up asking them to be involved in our planning. Once we gather information from the Kansas City meeting, then our planning will begin in earnest. To pull off a successful meeting, we will need everyone’s help.

What can you do now?

  1. Renew your membership to SLML for the 2005 calendar year.
  2. Look at the slml.org website on a regular basis to see what is going on in SLML and the plans for MCMLA 2006.
  3. Attend SLML events.
  4. Say YES when a SLML board member asks you to become involved in an activity.
  5. Contact a SLML board member if you have an event or an activity you want SLML to do.

This is a great time to be an ACTIVE member of SLML.
