Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville’s new School of Pharmacy opened its doors to its
first class of students in the Fall 2005 semester. The class size of eighty three students was chosen from four
hundred sixteen applicants. The
unique opportunity to create a school from scratch (developing
policies, a curriculum, a library collection, and watching their new
building take shape) proved to be a feature attracting faculty and
administrators from around the country to SIUE.
SIUE’s Lovejoy Library also has
been a part of the development process. Work began during the previous year with our Subject
Librarian and the Director of User Services consulting the web site
of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy which includes a
link to Basic Resources for Pharmaceutical Education. They compiled lists of materials and presented the lists to
the new faculty and administrators who chose books, journals and
databases (all electronic). Additional steps in the process include: waiting for an announcement that the state money had
officially been released; and hiring another Science and Health
Sciences Librarian to share the responsibilities with our other
Science and Health Sciences Librarian already in place. In addition to their responsibilities to the School of
Pharmacy, they are working with the School of Nursing, the School of
Dental Medicine, and the natural sciences (biology, chemistry,
mathematics and physics).
Recognizing public service in
SIUE’s mission statement and citizenship as one of our values.
Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift has identified a social compact of our
University to serve the citizens of southern Illinois. The School of Pharmacy will operate a Drug Information and
Wellness Center, to become operational on September 1, 2005. Initially the Center will service pharmacists participating
in educating the students in the pharmacy program. Later on the Center may expand its services based on the
needs of the community. These
are exciting times at SIUE and Lovejoy Library. |
