On October 18, SLML members joined law, academic, public, and special librarians from the St. Louis area at a Library Career Networking Reception for Library and Information Science students. The event was held at the Washington University West Campus and turnout of both students and professional librarians was impressive--approximately 50-60 participants in all. Many of the students are enrolled in the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science and Learning Technologies (SISLT) and take classes locally; other students commuted from Columbia, Missouri and other locales to attend.

Students were invited to bring resumes which were reviewed on-the-spot by information professionals. A panel discussion followed in which invited speakers described the application and interview process in their unique working environments. Patrick McCarthy, SLML member and Associate University Librarian for Health Sciences at Saint Louis University, gave a presentation entitled Interview Tips for New Librarians: An Academic and Medical Library Perspective. SLML members also distributed Medical Library Association (MLA) literature like the ever-popular (and accurate) brochure Medical Librarians ROCK!  Several students in the audience expressed strong interest in medical librarianship as a future career.

The event was sponsored by the St. Louis Metropolitan Area Chapter of the Special Libraries Association and due to its overwhelming success, SLML looks forward to participating in similar activities with them in the future.
