ST. LOUIS MEDICAL LIBRARIANS

Business Meeting

September 30, 1999

Minutes

A brief business meeting was held on Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center Conference Center. It immediately followed a writing workshop, conducted by Dr. Annette Veech, Washington University Olin School of Business.

Linda Mercer, Program Committee co-chairperson, reminded those in attendance about the satellite downlink on Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Becker Library, Washington University Medical School. SLML will sponsor the downlink.

Linda also took an informal poll of the members present about the feasibility of an evening meeting. Location and meeting running late into the evening were two concerns expressed by those in attendance. A program on knowledge management is being considered with Cindy Hill from Sun Microsystems, but an evening meeting may be necessary to accommodate her schedule.

The next regularly scheduled SLML meeting will be on evidence-based medicine. A panel discussion is the format and members will be invited to submit questions in advance.

Cheryle Cann, Governance Committee, reported that the revised Procedure Manual is up on the SLML web site.

Membership renewals were sent out by Cindy Fedders, Membership Committee. Members were urged to return them promptly.

NEW BUSINESS

President Suzanne Dunmire reported that the SLML web site now has a link to Amazon.com. There is no obligation for the membership to use the link. SLML does, however, receive a percentage of the sales that are made via the web site link. There was some concern raised that the Amazon link will take business away from local book sellers and distributors. President Dunmire said the link was intended for personal purchases, rather than institutional materials.

In connection with the Amazon link, SLML is requesting members submit recommendations of books of professional interest to be posted on the web site. It was also suggested that the readings recommended by Dr. Veech on business writing be placed on the web, along with any advance suggested readings for upcoming programs, particularly the knowledge management session.

ADJOURNMENT

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Maria Minowitz, Secretary
